How to Start Reading the Bible

A Simple Guide For Beginners

Many people want to read the Bible but feel overwhelmed about where to start.
The Bible is a large book made up of many smaller books written over thousands of years. Because of that, beginning can feel confusing.

The good news is that you don't need to understand everything at once.
The Bible is meant to be read gradually, allowing God’s Word to guide and transform us over time.

Here are some simple steps to help you begin.

1. Start With the Right Mindset

Before opening the Bible, remember that this is not just a history book or a novel. It is God’s Word.

2 Timothy 3:16 reminds us:

"All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness."

Approach the Bible with a heart that is open to learning and growing.

2. Start With the Gospel of John

Many beginners try to start at the beginning of the Bible in Genesis, but that can quickly become overwhelming.

A better place to start is the Gospel of John because it focuses on the life and teachings of Jesus.

The Gospel of John shows us:

  • who Jesus is

  • why He came

  • how He loves people

Reading about Jesus first helps build a strong foundation of faith.

3. Read a Little Each Day

You don’t need to read large sections.

Even 10–15 minutes a day can make a difference.

Consistency is far more important than quantity.

Psalm 119:105 says:

"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."

The Bible helps guide our lives step by step.

4. Ask Questions While You Read

As you read, ask yourself:

• What does this teach me about God?
• What does this teach me about people?
• How can I apply this to my life?

The Bible is meant to be understood and lived, not just read.

5. Pray Before and After Reading

Prayer helps us understand scripture more clearly.

Before reading you might pray something simple like:

"Lord, help me understand what You want to teach me through Your Word today."

God often reveals insight when we seek Him sincerely.

6. Don't Worry If You Don't Understand Everything

Even experienced believers encounter passages they don’t fully understand.

That is normal.

The important thing is to keep reading and growing.

Over time, the Bible becomes clearer.

A Simple Beginner Reading Plan

Start with these books:

1️⃣ Gospel of John
2️⃣ Gospel of Matthew
3️⃣ Psalms
4️⃣ Proverbs
5️⃣ Romans

These books give a strong foundation for understanding faith.

Final Encouragement

Reading the Bible is not about rushing through pages.
It is about building a relationship with God.

Each time you open scripture, you are allowing God to guide your life and shape your heart.

Start small, stay consistent, and allow God’s Word to grow within you.
